Here is a more complete explanation.

On the left side you have 2.3x + 1.7x. Since both of the values are in terms of x, they can be combined. This is like saying if you have 2 pencils and add 3 pencils you now have 5 pencils. So if you have 2.3 of something and add another 1.7 of that something, you now have 2.3 + 1.7 = 4 of that something.

So the first step is to combine the values on the left side of the equation:
2.3x + 1.7x = 24
4x = 24

Now you simply need to get the x by itself. It is multiplied by 4. To "undo" multiplication, you need to divide. So divide both sides of the equation by 4.
4x = 24
4x/4 = 24/4
x = 6

If you cannot add decimals, it is better to remove them. In your example, the greatest number of decimal places is 1, so you multiply it by 10^1 (of course, to both sides):
10(2.3x + 1.7x) = 10(24)

23x + 17x = 240

YOu can now solve this:
40x = 240

40x/40 = 240/40

x = 6

because 2.3x and 1.7x are like terms (both have x) you can add them.

2.3x +1.7x = 24
4x=24
x=6

to double check you can replace x with 6 and you'll get the right answer.

The letter next to the number is called the variable.
The actual number is called the coefficient.

If both coefficients have the same variable next to them, you can add the coefficients.

2.3 and 1.7 are coefficients

x is the variable next to 2.3 and 1.7

Both variables are same, therefore, you can add the coefficients.

this leaves you with the simple equation:
4x=24

At this point, all you have to do is divide both sides by 4 in order to find out what x equals.

4/4 =1

24/4 = 6

Therefore, x = 6.

Divide the first equation by x:

x(2.3+1.7)=24

Divide both sides by (2.3+1.7):

x=24/(2.3+1.7)

now solve for x
