If an employee purchases a dishwasher during a 15% off sale, how much will he pay if the dishwasher originally cost $450?

It depends on how your employer gives the discount. If he gives the total 35% off the $450 then your cost would be $292.50 plus tax. But if he gives you the addtional 20% after the original 15% has been taken then it would break down like this.

$450 x 0.15 = $67.50
$450-$67.50=$382.50
$382.50 x 0.20=$76.50
$383.50-$76.50=$306.00 plus tax

This sounds like a syntax question, not as much a math question. The lowest price of the dishwater sounds like it would be $450 - .15 x $450 = $382.50 The use of "additional" sounds like it means "after the lowest price is found," not "summed with the original discount." So, $382.50 - .20 x 382.50 = $306 $306 seems like the right answer.

You cannot add the percentages.

First, figure out how much the current price of the dishwasher is (after being reduced 15%):
450 - (15%)(450) = 450-67.5 = 382.50

Now reduce the price an additional 20%:
382.5 - (20%)(382.5) = 382.5 - 76.5 = $306

$450 - 15% = $382.5 - 20% = $306
