Best clutch hitter ever is a very strong statement, but I would argue that he is the best clutch hitter in baseball today. Maybe by the time his career is over he can be called the best clutch hitter ever. Not to mention he defines Red Sox baseball and might be the most likable guy in baseball right now also.

Yeah very tough statement to make when he only has one world series ring to his name.
I think to say ever you first have to look at guys who have won more than one World Series and Ortiz as clutch as he may be at this period of his career hasn't always been that way. I had the (dis)pleasure of watching Ortiz donning a Twins uniform (being from MN) and repeatdedly striking out with runners in scoring position in crucial situations. An argument can be made for him being the most clutch guy right now, but not ever.
Reggie Jackson has several world series rings to his name and as his nickname clearly states, he was an essential part of those championships, including 1977 hitting 3 homeruns off of Bob Welch and Charlie Hough in a crucial world series game. When Ortiz can do that, I will include him in this argument, but until then he needs to just keep doing what hes doing.
~By the way, Reggie wasnt a batting average hitter to begin with, he was a HR hitter and a HUGE RBI guy, so calling out his BA through the total playoff history is bunk. Check the RBI's and back to me Jack

Best clutch hitter ever? Absolutely not, especially from a guy who's hitting .267 and only has to worry about sitting on the bench and hitting. He's good, but maybe if he got some more hits during the middle of games, the sox wouldn't always have to rely on him coming up in the bottom of the ninth with 2 men on.

Im a white sox fan,
but I must admit that when david ortiz goes to the plate against my team, I get worried.
That man Defines Designated Hitter like no other. He refuses to leave the plate without a hit (preferably a homer run).
He's so huge, he has to intimidate opposing pitchers.
Did you see that 14 pitch at-bat against the yankees in 2004 playoffs?
my point exactly.
I personally think he may be a better hitter than manny.

Ortiz has definately shown himself to be the appropriate seize hitter in the present day, possibly ever. Jack Clark for the period of his top grew to become into very corresponding to what Ortiz is now (seize performances) yet did no longer carry the same presence that Ortiz does. whilst Ortiz have been given up final nighttime in that problem, did each individual doubt what might take place? different "seize" hitters who might desire to be noted: Kirby Puckett Derek Jeter (he's seize, just to no longer Ortiz' stature) Michael youthful

The best clutch hitter in recent times maybe but not of all time. There used to be a guy named Eddie Murray who played for the Baltimore Orioles who was pretty deadly in the late innings throughout his entire career. I believe it was close to 500. Not just for a playoff series but his entire career including playoffs.

"Right now" if it was the 7th game of the World Series, bottom of the ninth 2 out, bases loaded, down one run...I would want Albert Pujols at the plate.... George Brett was the best clutch hitter I've ever seen...The bigger the game the better he played...If anyone really thinks Reggie Jackson was that great a playoff + World Series hitter, check his stats...For the Playoffs and World Series his batting average actually goes DOWN from his regular season stats and his regular season BA wasn't that good...Don't get me wrong I like Jackson he played on a lot of good teams and he had some big games in the WS but overall, his post season hitting wasn't that good...
