It was a short lived cultural taboo for a while, but you've got it in reverse. Left was normal for a straight guy to have, while right ear theoretically indicated that the man was gay. This is no longer true, and anyone who has a problem with it probably just has problems with piercings in general.

kivrin9 got it! Left was for the straights and pirates and right for for the bents.
These days, you'll see guys with both ears pierced, multiple piercings, gages. Can't tell anything about their orientation from their ornamentation, if you catch my drift.

I used to think that....with all the piercing going on....I don't think it matters anymore.
