I'd say no younger than 16. By that age they are responsible for the car they drive so they can be responsible for a cell phone too.

from what i've seen a lot of parents give their kids cell phones in order to be able to keep track on them. i think the appropriate time would be when they start wandering around with their friends and come home late. anyway, i don't think it means you're spoiling them if you buy them cell phones, it's a useful device.

like 16? my sister just got one though, she's only 9, what the heck does a 9 year old need a cell phone for?

I got my daughter one at 11. I had a really bad scare with her bus being in an accident and no one would give me any information about what was going on. Luckily, everyone was ok and no one was hurt, but I ran to the store the next day and bought her one.

I don't think it's about age. It's about responsibility. When you can pay for it yourself, you can get one. If your parents have to pay for it, you don't deserve a cell phone. That's just my opinion. And these spoiled little rich kids who have everything handed to them apply to my above statement.

Pager as a young teen, no cellphone tell have their own job to pay some if not all of the bill.
