This is a WORLD cup, not a Sunday leauge. Why are so many controversial calls being butchered by referees at FIFA's showcase world tournament?

I think the problem is FIFA, who give so many directives before such a major tournament, it confuses the referees... FIFA should say "you are here because you are the best referees in the world, keep doing what you're doing."

well there is no point to call a bad game. These refs get paid very good money to come down and play. When they officiate terribly then they are not call back for the future games. Now those future games are a big payout for the refs. FIFA watches the games over and over to see is the ref did a good job. Now there is plenty of refs in the world, good ones so the answer about a talentless sport is a dumb one. Futbol is a world wide sport, recognized by many cultures in many countries. Futbol will never go unrecognized in the world

all the refs are being judged by fifa there afraid to use a bit of common sense so they book players for the smallest of things players are only human and refs should be able to tell the difference between a really bad foul and a genuine attempt made for the ball but just mis timed but they cant and so they are ruining the games by sending players off

Cause they are deaf dumb and blind...

No but really, the responsibility falls on FIFA.. they tell the refs how to umpire a game... they also change rules and regulations only months before major tournaments, how are they supposed to umpire a fair game like that?

probably too many new directives as someone mentioned. i thought the portugal match was shocking. it seemed as though the netherlands were out from the start to foul and dive. they twice went for ronaldo to injury him out the game and they suceeded. cant really blame the ref for the sendings off. although deco was a joke. he hardly even held onto the ball and hes off. the usa-ghana penalty decision was a joke too,. doubt usa would have done anything anywayz though. and true todays match between italy and aussies- sending off was wrong and so was the penalty decision.

they're not trained well enough,
they don't see things, they don't call things
they 're only people like us, they make mistakes buy why?
here's the thing, I suggest they should consult their decisions before calling them out and sending players off from the field with a red card, maybe some replays on the screens for refs?
