It appears that the Turks & Caicos (which is the name of a chain of islands in the Caribbean north of Haiti) are talking to the Canadian government. The goal? To have the islands become a Canadian province, or at least a territory with the idea of possibly becoming a province in the future. - CBC News

What about the Island - Do you think it is a good deal for them?

Hah! I think it's cool. At least that's my first thought.

Then when I think more about it, I begin to realize that it may have negative implications for the islands. Of course, with territory status, the people would have freedom of movement to Canada, and improved job prospects, so it ought to help them. However, it would hurt the current economy, since T&C would then be subject to Canada's onerous regulations, which would be especially hurtful to their financial industry, which operates largely based upon its less-regulated environment. So, I can see some problems coming from it. But on the whole, I think it would do a lot to provide opportunity for both...for Canadians to have some sunlight, and for residents of Turks and Caicos to have ready access to better job opportunities.

I heard this, and as a Guadeloupean (from an island which became a province of France after slavery), I wondered if it wasn't a regressive process! I mean some people are trying to get away from cultural and economic dependence, and others seem to look forward to it!
I can't judge their decision, as I'm not familiar with their situation but, I think it can't be completely positive.
