You of course have the right to read books, watch TV or do something else. It is your call, regardless of whether you read for entertainment or to increase your own horizons. A good book can distill another person's entire life experience or summarize their major thoughts on a subject they have devoted much of their life to. You get a free ride. At a minimum, if you read well written books, you may expand your communications skills (expanded word use?) and share far more interests with far more people. Ignorance can be cured even if stupid won't budge. Your question is very well written; perhaps you read books?

I love to read. Reading takes me to different times, countries and cultures. I can see things through others eyes, other personalities.
As a young teen one of my favorite things to do was to climb a tree with a book, and be perfectly contented
Historical fictions are fun, but most books are fun because it's like I'm there. My home becomes a palace, a jungle, a spaceship or any thing else.
When I read, I can tune everything else out, and the longer the book the better. When I finish the book, it's like saying goodbye to a good friend.
I really enjoy unabridged audio books, or I'd never get anything done.
You have no idea what you are missing, and if you don't care to read, you may become a shallow person with no imagination.

You could make the same point for watching tv, playing video games, etc. with the way you phrased it, but books are beneficial. Books help improve your reading skills, expand your vocabulary, and keep the brain active thinking rather than mindlessly absorbing information watching tv. You can learn stuff from non-fiction books. From fiction books you can escape reality for a while, expand your mind to new ideas and possibilities, and learn from the characters mistakes or personality defects or be able to understand different kinds of people better.

Reading entertains you like watching TV, but you also use your mind. That's why movies can seem really dated really quick, but books, not so much. Even if you're reading a book that's 100 years old, as it's projected through your mind, so you can read it, you sorta "modernize" it for yourself.
Reading is relaxing, fun, and makes you smarter! I'm sure that most people in this country feel like you do, which is why we're doomed!

To gain knowledge, to read a story, to indulge yourself in what you wish was your life, to find out information... there are many purposes to read. No, you can't get the same experience from watching TV. I like to take in the emotional impact of every word and imagine what is going on. When you watch TV, you just SEE. Your brain does no work whatsoever.

Because reading will stimulate your brain. That's why they give criminals in prison TVs. According to a friend of mine that works in a prison, the inmates stay calmer and are basically "brain-dead" when they watch TV.
Reading keeps your mind sharp and you may actually learn something! It's been shown that stimulating your brain by reading and doing word puzzles may help stave off Alsheimers.

books stimulate the brain in different and more profound ways than simply visual cues such as television.
for this reason, and many others books are good for you.
books are also useful when traveling in planes, cars and boats, space ships, and other places where you can't get television reception.
think about it:
books are just great.
may I also pose a question to you:
what's the point of television when we have so many books?

I think books stretch the imagination more then a movie. Instead of seeing someone else's interpretation of character or event, you make it for yourself. Plus, it builds your reading skills which is always a bonus.

Read a book and then watch a movie that's been made from it and see how much you've missed.

Because reading a book is much better. You get lots more information and detail, as well as more plot information and character information or facts
