Is it just me, or are other people noticing how an awfully lot of people on Yahoo! Answers have no self-esteem? They want to know if they are beautiful enough, or if they are skinny enough or too fat. They expect complete strangers to define them. What gives? Shouldn't this be addressed somehow? Perhaps with counselors that could be hired by Yahoo? Should this be "Ask a Yahoo! Counselor" ?

Thank you! I agree! I am soo tired of reading questions like, "Do you like my avatar?" or "Am I cute". They need to go in a chat room with kids their age and stop wasting space on Answers!

I agree with you, it is very sad that people really feel the need to care about what others think about them. It does amuse me though when they ask you to rate an Avatar..... it is a cartoon for crying out loud!!

As for counsellors, it would be nice but also could be very dangerous unless they are properly trained! it is easy for someone to say an 'off the cuff' remark on here and it to be taken completely the wrong way. I would feel awful if I had given someone some bad advice which they took and were actually worse off.

It should definitely be addressed and I believe the rules do state that these sorts of questions go against 'the code' but unless they screen every single question posted it will be impossible to stop.
The best thing to do is to simply ignore those types of questions. If you say "yes you are so beautiful" it may raise their self esteem a bit but it is also encouraging them to believe what others tell them rather than find the answer themselves from within. If people call them ugly then it can obviously be a kick in the teeth.

Very tough call and a very good question...... I hope you find the right one and we can all help these people.

You can't have ask a yahoo counselor dear. Why? well because there's an awful lot of stupid people here too, that would only post stupid answers. There is really no way to control what idiots put as questions or answers. If you see something stupid, ignore it, if it's offensive to you, report it, that's really all you can do. As far as low self esteem. well that's society in general, these people wanna be accepted by society and their views on what's beautiful. maybe they do have self esteem problems, the only way to help them, is if they want to be helped.

You have excellent point. I was shocked to see people on here that were talking about committing suicide, and wanted people to talk them out of it. I can't believe how low some people's self esteem is. I think there should be an Ask A Yahoo Counselor section because I think it would do allot of good.

Well if you really think about it we are being the counselors when we answer questions like these. Yahoo does not parent this kids. If there is something wrong with them, their parents should be the ones hiring counselors. So if you ever see more questions like that answer them as if you were a real counselor.

You're right, but it may not be what you think: although there may be quite a few people with emotional issues looking for free answers on here, there are likely also more than a few 'fakers'. So that needs to be kept into consideration.

Therapists cost money (even online ones), so Yahoo! would have to probably charge something for that service. If they do, I'd be one of the first to jump into that pool as it would pay off my occupational psychology degree in no time. ;)

I think the problem with that idea is that it would get abused too much. There is no way for Yahoo! (or us) to determine which of the questions asked are serious. I think there are a lot of people just looking for attention, or compliments....are just entertaining themselves to see how people will answer questions.
I don't think it is really the responsibility of Yahoo! to deal with the user's problems...how could they possibly manage it. They have provided us with this forum to communicate and the best we can do is try to ask REAL questions and give good, honest answers. It is up to each of us to try to weed out the fake questions and give constructive answers to those who really need them.

What do you expect? It isn't surprising that people who spend all their time on the computer are reaching out via the computer. No, it is not Yahoo's job to give people self esteem. It is their job to learn to grow a spine, be proud of themselves, and have self esteem. No one else can make them do this anyway.

Nice idea, but Yahoo could never be responsible for an individual who needed counseling via internet. Must be done in an office setting. But, ya know, folks ask these questions much like everyone tells their hairdresser everything. Continue to be there for people, they are just looking for general opinions from people who do not know who they are.

I think a lot of the people posting on answer are young - in their teens. And that's just a time when people have insecurities (are my ____s too small, am I too short?) and so this is an anonymous forum to hear something other than from your mom. Moms are great but you gotta wonder about impartiality.
