buy a dehumidifier. it collects the water at the bottom and you dump it out. You'll be shocked how much it will collect. You can regulate it.
Also, be sure you don't have any dead rodents anywhere. that will smell nasty.
Let fresh air in from time to time, spray some glade or nice scent every now and then.
get rid of mold and mildew, if it persists, you may have a mold problem.

The musty odor is caused by moisture. Remove the cause of moisture i.e., a humidifier, open windows, doors or hatchway, repair walls with a sealant if/where water may be leaking in, use waterproofing. Once the cause of the moisture is removed then you can continue airing the area and you'll remove the musty odor. Additionally, if there is any old furniture, carpeting, cardboard boxes, magazines, clothes, junk etc, remove those as well, as they will harbor the smell.

Mix one part Clorine to 8 parts water. Use a garden sprayer and spray away. Then, after it dries, mix one part white wine vinegar with 4 parts water and again, spray away. Let it soak in for about two hours and then open up all the windows the basement has, use a fan if you have one. Musty smells are due to mold, this treat ment will kill the mold and remove the smell.
Oh, and when I say spray away, I mean spray EVERYTHING that the bleach won't harm!

Try using a couple of opened bags of charcoal along with the de humidifier.
Charcoal naturally absorbs odors and moisture.
Use real wood charcoal and be sure that it doesn't have any flame accelerants.!

for a real solution not a cover up
clean with baking soda and vinegar in water and for future problems hang a bag of activated charcoal or volcanic rock ( never tried the rock myself ) HEY DO NOT use "real wood charcoal"
use activated charcoal only ( made for odor control and filtration )
