when they measure for example a bathroom, how do they come up with what the square yard of the room is?

It just means 36" x 36" or 9 square feet. If you had a 15 ft x 12 ft room for example. It would be 180 sq. feet (multiply the length times the width). To figure how many square yards were in the room, you'd just divide 180 by 9. So for the example, you'd have 20 square yards.

A square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet. However, tile is measured using square feet, which is 1 foot by 1 foot. Good luck.
