If you have $500 to blow then go for the Dyson. It really is a great vacuum. My church recently bought one and it is amazing how powerful the suction is. It comes in really handy when you have 50 kids eating cheese puffs. If you are looking to spend around $100 dollars then go for a Hoover upright. I've got one of these and it works great for the average household. I've got a toddler, a 7 yr old, and a cat so I guess they're equivalent to two shedding dogs. The key to keeping your vacuums 'sucking' well is to change the bags at least once a month. Sometimes every two weeks if you have really large hairy dogs. It makes a big difference as soon as you change the bag. Don't go for the canister vacuums. They suck because they don't suck as well.

It really depends on how much money you want to spend. A really durable vacuum is an Oreck. They aren't extrem;y expensive but they work like they are. Another good vacuum is a Eureka, bagless. I have a dog in my house and Mine gets the hair and pet dander up very well. I don't know what part of the country you are from, but here mine was only $80.00 at Wal-mart. Make sure you get one that has really good suction and you'll be happy with it.

I swear by my bagless. I will never go back to a bag.
Hoover, kenmore and eureka are great vaccums but expensive. I personal have a dirt devil scorpion bagless and I am completely satisfied with it. Even though with the bagless the hempa filters are expensive to replace, I have owned my vaccum 2 years and haven't had to replace it yet, but the replacement cost is about $30.00 well worth not having to worry about bags and the suction is fantastic! and I have a long haired cat and i swear by the bagless

I would have suggested a Kirby, but your talking about a sweeper that cost hundreds of dollars. I use a dirt devil for commercial cleaning a it cleans fine in both the doctor's offices and the manufacturing companies that I clean. It is cheap and you will be able to afford it.

Kohls Department Store has a Hoover EmPower bagless on sale for $79.99-- a good bargain. It is bagless with a HEPA filter.
Another good choice is Eureka Boss-- I have one and it has good suction.

find one with a hepa filter. vaccuums without a good filter will let dander and dust back in the air and makes it difficult for people with allergies or breathing issues.
we have a cat and we use a kenmore canister vaccuum witha hepa filter. my husband has animal and pollen allergies and even he can use this vaccuum without constant sneezing for the next 3 hours.

ORECK- I've had mine for years and it's still running strong, not to mention that it weighs 4lbs.
Kirby's are to expensive and heavy,Hoovers and Bissel all have plastic parts, heavy and they suck cause they don't suck as well as the ORECK.
