There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a redneck if you go by the true sense of the word rather than what people assume it means. I don't think people actually understand what a redneck is (unless they are one, which I am!). The term redneck actually comes from the permanent redness of a person's neck after they spend a lot of time working under the hot sun (think of the farmers of yesterday). Because people worked all day, children included, it was assumed that the person wasn't blessed with intelligence. That was many moons ago, though. Now, redneck is still assumed to be negative, but the ones of us who are proud to say we're rednecks know it's a great compliment. Here in Georgia, being a redneck means being a person who says whats on their mind, whose not afraid to take a stand, and fight for what they believe in. Rednecks are generally laid back people who enjoy the simple things in life, are friendly, and hardworking. I'm not ashamed of who I am or where I come from, just as you shouldn't let ignorant people get you down. WE know what a redneck is and what a redneck isn't, unlike people who just stereotype us. So keep your head up girl, and never let someone make you feel bad because you're redneck.

I can't really answer your question either. The only thing I can think of is the whole Martin Luther King movement and Selma Alabama. Most the people up there at the time were rednecks. My husband is a redneck, but he is not racist. Hope this helps.

Generally, one doesnt brag about being a redneck because they are thought to be uneducated, indecent, uncouth and generally unattractive with no manners. Sure, it is a stereotype that is widely perpetuated in society (heard of the redneck games?) but it isnt the most favorable group to identify yourself with in part because these people that claim to be rednecks do strange things for all to see and then claim that their redneck lifestyle is why. However, it may just be stereotypes at work and there is probably nothing wrong with rednecks. in the future though, you may not want to declare yourself a redneck. When you think about it, why would you limit yourself to one bad description? I wouldnt.

Nothing. It's just a title that people give people, and maybe make fun of because it's different then them. But that goes across the board; redneck, city-slicker, whatever. "Rednecks" have some back-country old school ways, where the "City-Slickers" are adapting all the new trends. It's all a matter of preference, you can't say one way is better then the other.

Jessie B said it all. People in the north have a stereotype of rednecks that you wouldn't want to brag about. But in the South redneck means honest, hardworking, family-oriented, practical, etc. Thus the ductape redneck jokes...
Be proud of who you are.

There are many "sterotypes" of Rednecks, and its all been bad.

Rednecks are considered of low education, beer drinking, nascar fanatics, and womanizers.

So, whats a "redneck" to do?

They have to get some education, and put the guns down and stop swilling beer like its an open tap and they are the drain :)

At college, people consider my Son a Redneck!
Just because he likes Country Music and he collects knives. (Though he doesnt keep them in college).

Its all in the "image" of what they percieve, people to be...

I wish you well..

you dont know what a redneck IS. There is nothing wrong with being southern, its why i moved to alabama. A redneck, by definition, is uneducated, ignorant, and naive. That's trashy...be careful what you call yourself. But if you ARE uneducated, ignorant, and naive....then go for it
