It's called a continuance. Call the court clerk's office (not the clerk and recorder), the number should be either on your ticket or in your phone book, probably listed as "court", and ask what the procedures are in your area. If you can't get a continuance without appearing in court, tell the judge that you would like to consult an attorney, as you have the right to assistance of counsel, and ask for a continuance at that time. I've read your other questions regarding the obstructed sign, and there should be case law that supports your position; you should talk to an attorney to get the best result in your case.

Only with a good reason. Go to the court and request a new date, they will tell you if its possible.
