The publication industry always make information current as possible. So if it May and the August issue is out already, then you have three months worth of information to be current.

Ok, and now for the real answer. Let's say you work in a magazine/book store. Well at the current date June is almost to end so you would go through your magazine racks to send back all your magazines older than July. Now lets say the Mad Magazine you find on the shelf says August 2006. You wouldn't send that mag back yet right? That's why the magazines are marked ahead. So they will have more time to sell before they get pulled off the shelves.

Yes, magazines do have dealines to keep, but they're dated ahead for the same reason something you mail order takes "6-8 weeks for delivery". Not all retail outlets will necessarily get a monthly issue at the same time, so in the event of a delay in getting to you or your newsstand, their bases are covered. A related question, "Why do magazines come with a 'display until _____'?" (a particular date), is answered the same way.
