seriously this makes no sense to me. ive read who knows how many answers to why peopl hate bush and they all include the fact that he didnt get elected by the people.

the constitution clearly states that the president gets elected by the ELECTORAL COLLEGE not popular vote.

please, bush bashers and liberals explain this one to me.

a lot of people think that the electoral college is antiquated and no longer necessary and think that the president SHOULD get elected by popular vote.

also, in the vast majority of times, the electoral college and the popular vote match, so no one gets their panties in a wad until they don't.

a lot of people don't know that the electors don't have to vote for what their state voted for. Ohio went for bush on the popular side, but had the electors exercised their option and voted for Gore, there would be nothing the voters of Ohio could have done about it, and we'd have President Gore instead of President Bush today (since Ohio was the swing state this last time around)

***please note that i have not expressed my own opinion, just what the issue is***

Well, you've read all about it, so no one is going to give you an answer that will change your view, I would guess. But the main issue is the electoral college itself. It did not accurately represent what the people of this country wanted (i.e. the popular vote) and so people believe that Bush did not win the election. Yes, the constitution says that the person with the most electoral votes is the winner. So, technically, Bush is the winner. But why have an electoral college if it does not vote the way the people do? What's the point of the electoral college?

I am not a Bush basher, nor a Liberal, but I think I can answer this one for you. They rail against Bush because they dont like him, his politics, religious beliefs, or the war in Iraq. When your beliefs are opposite the party in power, you take every opportunity to take shots at them. The Conservatives would be doing the same thing if Gore or Kerry had been elected.

As for the Electoral College, I think it is a terrible system. Elections should be decided by popular vote. The Electoral College makes millions of votes meaningless. If the Dems win California (as they usually do), then all the votes cast for the Republican candidate in that state are basically voided. The same goes for Republican states and Democratic candidate votes.

because they can. same as when conservatives complained about clinton. when **** like this happends people start talking about improving the way presidents are elected, but nothing comes of it. it was set up to keep the masses from having power because they weren't educated enough according to the founding fathers.
