It is what it is called "Sports Entertainment" It has elements of sports because of the participants must be in top notch shape and may become injured during the course of the match but the matches have already been planned out for the winner(s) and the wrestlers have also planned out routines for the most part. They entertain and hurt themselves but the winner goes in already knowing. So I would say it is neither. Definatly not a comedy more like a drama but not a sport by definition.

I really didn't want to answer this question, since I'm SICK TO DEATH of it....

Wrestling is NOT fake, it's REAL entertainment. It started in the late 1800's and early 1900's as part of the travelling carnival. Promoters did (and still do) call the shots as to who wins and loses, but the wrestlers communicate during the match as to what series of events/moves is coming next. So, it's not rehearsed. Other than the "spots," which are the events that are either highlights of the match (like table bumps) or important storyline elements, all action is determined by the participants as it happens.

To say wrestling is fake, and therefore, stupid, is to say all fictitious entertainment is fake, and therefore, stupid.

At times pro wrestling is intended as comedy, as most forms of entertainment have some comedic content.

As for the moron with the ESPN comment... In 1986, ESPN ran tapes of the Global Wrestling Federation, so if being on ESPN is all you require to prove its credibility, your welcome.

some of it is a sport. the other 'storyline' is not a part of the sport. I call it a sport because there are some physically demanding aspects that do require proper training to be able to perform.
Much like if you dont know how to take a bump then back/arm/hip/shoulder/neck injuries can be frequent. proper training and knowledge these are far and inbetween.
think about it. How are you going to fake landing on the ring mat from 6 feet (height of other guy) in the air from a vertical suplex? Sure the ring has a bit of give and recoil to it, but its not a trampoline, you dont see the guy bounce the equal distance he fell from do you?

wrestling isn't real. If a person has ever seen wrestling live they can see that the wrestlers are not really hitting one another. Also when the wrestler is down and "pinned" why do you think their mouth is covered? So that he/she can talk to their opponent. I've been watching wrestling for 22 years. It's a nice soap opera.

It isn't a real sport, but it is athletic entertainment. Some people may view it as a comedy while others see it more as a soap opera for the testosterone crowd.

Amateur wrestling is a real sport. Professional wrestling is meant to be entertainment, more acting than sport.
