Its a different kind of fitness, players "back then" were strong, sturdy, working class men who got into football probably while working in a manual labour or factory job, they couldnt make lightning fast runs along the wing all day,but they could probably play 90mins carrying a sack of coal with a broken arm(remember they had no substitutes back then).
The modern game is more about pace and acceleration whereas the older game was more about strong center-fowards,fearless defence and the odd nippy winger.
Modern footballers these days are athletes in their own right(pick your own lazy favourite to the list of non-athletes) who spend as much time on gym work as they do on the game, this is not a bad thing as it can make stunning football, mind you Socrates (the Brasilian captain in the 70`s)smoked 60 a day including DURING the match!

I don't think so, maybe the game moves quicker and also now the teams are analysed so much, they must run more due to all the tactics.
But you are right, the old footballers didn't whinge anywhere near as much, and 2 of the World Cups about 20 - 30 years ago were in Mexico, which was alot hotter then Germany, I fancy.

Guess I must be older than you because I sure do. Soccer players have always preferred cooler weather matches. You ought to see some of our college players from England when they first get here (Texas) and have to start the pre-training season in 110 degree weather. Plus they now wear uniforms made mostly of nylon that just doesn't breath as well as the old cotton.

Most likely modern day footballers are fitter. However, I agree, they are mostly a bunch of prima donas.

back then the global warming wasn't as bad.besides I know on the day of the England-Ecuador match,if you're talking about soccer, the temperature was 90 degrees and nobody can stand that much heat.
Besides,if you think you can do better, why aren't you the one out on the field instead of the bitchin and whiners
