The kick-off counts as a free kick at which opposition have to be 10 yards away from the ball. The centre circle is of 10 yds radius and the opposition are not allowed to encroach within it at a kick off.
The "D" is an arc of a circle of radius 10 yds with the centre at the penalty spot. It is there to ensure that all players are 10yds from the spot when penalty shot is taken. I believe that Major Buckley, the then manager of W.B.A., realised that there was a small part of the pitch outside "the area" that was within 10 yds of the penalty spot and so the "D" was added to the pitch markings to ensure that no player was within 10 yds at the time the penalty was taken.

the center circle is so that at the kick off the opposing team can not rush in there. they must wait outside untill the kickoff is taken. The "d's" are the penalty circle, and serve to give whoever is taking the kick room. Once the ball is touched the other players can come into this circle and the penalty area

Both serve as 10 yard restraints
The center circle is for kick offs
The "D" represents 10 yard from behind the PK spot to keep defenders at least 10 yards away in all directions

The center circle is to mark how close the opposing team can be to the ball at kick off. I am assuming the "D's" are in the corners. These quarter circles mark the kick off areas of corner kicks.
