I think it is because Morales clearly represents a thorn in the side of U.S. imperialism because he stands up for Bolivians in the ways we can only dream of our politicans standing up for us.

Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Otto Reich said of Morales, "We do not believe we could have normal relations with someone who espouses these kind of policies."
U.S. Ambassador Manuel Rocha went so far as to issue a public statement urging Bolivians not to vote for Morales during the election--and threatened to cut off international aid if they did. "The Bolivian electorate must consider the consequences of choosing leaders somehow connected with drug trafficking and terrorism," Rocha said. Rocha’s threat backfired and Morales was elected.
This is what the US calls "diplomacy" meaning threats towards the democratically elected president of Bolivia, like it or not, coca or not, he was fairly elected by the people.
So believe it fool, theres some facts for you...
