It storms more in the afternoon than in the morning because the sun (in addition to creating all of the earth's weather) gives tremendous amounts of energy to weather systems making them 'stormy' as opposed to just 'rainy'. In reality the afternoon / early evening hours are the most common times for a storm (during the warm weather seasons at least)
Cheers.

Probably because the thunderstorm cells had developed far to the southwest of Chicago when the sun was up and therfore more energy in the atmosphere. It is always more favorable for thunderstorms to develop to the south and west of Chicago. And by the time these t-storm cells make it to Chicago it is night time.

Imagine that from 1:00 until 3:00 is the hotest parts of the day. When it gets to be about 5:00 the air cools fast and the air becomes unstable. That is when the storms develope.
