I speak Japanese, and to get books I have no choice but to order them from B&N. I was called from B&N telling me my book had arrived. I got there, and this girl tells me she didn't find it, so it hasn't there. I insisted, and she got mad, and she called the manager. I told the manager I received a call, and as I was talking to him, I saw my last name in big bold letters on my book. I told the girl that was my book. She replied, "oh yeah, I saw it, but it was in Japanese, so I didn't think i was yours". Then another time, I was happy I found some books in Japanese at the store. I was reading them, and this guy comes up to me telling he's going to take the books away, I tell him I'm reading them. He replies "It's not like you are going to buy them". I really hate the people who work there, if there anywhere else I could order books in Japanese I'd go elsewhere. It's a bookstore, shouldn't they hire smart people?

I worked for Barnes & Noble for two years. I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience, but I don't consider myself a jerk or dumb. It just depends on the person you talk to. Unfortunately, there are some ignorant people who get hired, but you can help change that. If you continue to have problems at that particular store, contact the regional manager --not just the store manager, because sometimes they could be a problem, too. If there are people who treat you like that, they definitely shouldn't be working there. Make sure you get the employee names. It's a shame that you would have to report it in the first place, but at least let them know so they can get those people out of there. You can go to the B & N website to find contact information.

I think perhaps that this is a universal problem and not just one at Barnes & Noble. I think that people just become so culturally blind and egocentric that they automatically assume that if you don't look like you should speak this language, wear these clothes, eat these foods, etc. then you shouldn't/don't. The best way I've found to deal with such ignorant individuals is just to smile and tell them to have a nice day, knowing that will a) completely flabbergast them and b) keeps you from sinking to their level by becoming as angry and bitter as they are.

The best way to get back at them is to do what you have already done, and let other people (your friends, family, co-workers, etc.) know about your experiences with this particular store. And if possible, stop doing business there.

Have you tried Amazon.com ? They have quite a wide range of books and other media... and are usually much cheaper than B&N and Borders. ;)

The best way to handle this problem is not to shop there. Buy your books on Amazon.

Hmm. Where do you live? The people that work at my local B&N are all very friendly and personable.
