I have to go into work this afternoon and I will be working 6 hours straight without a break. We are always understaffed and I work mostly alone in a department that requires me to do projects, ring people up, stock stuff, answer the phone, and deal with customers on ordereing stuff and etc. I can't just leave my work area but have no one to cover for me because no one else there at the time can do my job (we all do completely different things). I never get a break but on a slow night it is ok because I sometimes have a lot of stand around time but on a busy day or evening like today will probably be, I will be busy. I will around another hour off the clock getting my register counted and waiting for my ride. It seems like everywhere I work, I don't get breaks. My last job I worked 10 hours with only a lunch half hour. Does anyone else have to deal with this. I'm not to thrilled about having to go so long without food or drink and not having any dinner.

I sent you a link to the Department of Labor, perhaps they have some standards on working conditions like yours.

Why don't you look into jobs with the state or city you live in?

Actually, this is against the law. Check with your state Fair Labor Board to find out what the laws are in your state...but, everyone should have at least a 15 minute break for every four hours. And, a 10 hour shift with only 1/2 hour lunch is ludicrous! You should get at least 1 hr lunch and 3 15 minute breaks at that job.

Do some checking....I think you'll be surprised at what you find out. The next question is...do you want to report your employer(s) to the board?

In Canada, it's law to provide a half hour break after 5 hours of work. It doesn't have to be paid tho. I had a job a few years back that didn't allow breaks and I reported them to the labour board (there were other issues too) and I won my case.

Check into your state and federal laws. You are allowed BY LAW a 15 min. break for every 4 hours you work. And I believe federally a half hour for every 6 hour shift. Check with you local Better Business Buearu.

TAKE YOU BREAK!!! ITS THE LAW!!! call the labor board and report them they will investigate and ask everyone where you work if they are getting their break, and will monitor them , they could be fined like $5'000 $ for breaking the law everyone else takes their break and so should you if they dont have coverage for you thats their problem not yours ! if they threaten you tell them the dept. of labor told you to take your break not matter what , did you know that in some places if you work off the clock you can be fired ?? make them pay you !!!dont clock out then they will see they need to hire another person !

one simple phone call
call your state employment agency they'll have a list of legal break times for hours worked per shifts by what employers in your state mandate for any question you have, good luck if you're in new york you have a mandatory half hour lunch break for six hour shift as well as a 15 minute break, if working 8 hours two 15 minute breaks with half hour mandatory lunch over 8 hours hour mandatory lunch

Call the department of labor on them. They will investigate and you might lose your job, should you give your full name and complaint. The company will "find" a reason to fire you... I've been there before!
