Only in so much as most people who use harder drugs first used marijuana.
However, by this definition alcohol and cigarettes are also gateway drugs.
Perhaps using one criminalized substance, makes you more likely to do other "criminal" acts, like using other controlled substances.
I support the medical use of marijuana. But if the government would allow research we would know way more about active ingredients and have a better delivery system.
I object to recreational use on the grounds of side effects (amotivational syndrome, "I think I'll just stay here and stay stoned", for instance.) Health consequences such as emphysema. If you are terminal with cancer or have glaucoma, emphysema 15-20 years down the line are of hardly any concern. If you are 19 and want to be able to climb a flight of stairs or have vigorous sex at 40 or 50 it might be something you want to consider.

I think it depends. MJ is definitely less harmful than alcohol - but anything in excess is a problem. People usuually use drugs to mood alter, and honestly it is a choice as to whether you move on to something harder. If you're in situations where you're stoned and then harder drugs are introduced - your likelihood for trying them is higher, and those drugs are far more physically addictive and dangerous. The other side of it is, if you feel pulled to try harder drugs - you might want to look at yourself harder and see why it is you need to do them at all. Studies are showing that drugs and mental health are very much related. People tend to self-medicate with alcohol and drugs to deal with depression or other issues - and don't even realize it. The down side (like harder drugs) is that they are depressants so doing them actually perpetuates the problem and makes it worse, and makes the need to continue use even greater. The "gateway" is there - always - but that depends on how tuned in you are to why you're getting high and if you can stop and look at why you might want to move to something stronger. Ultimately it's all about choice and taking repsonsibility - but that means getting "conscious" about yourself emotionally. Those who fall into drugs through alcohol or pot - usually do it because they aren't aware of why they're using in the first place - and they don't know how to get out of the cycle and aren't willing to ask for help. Just keep all of this in mind. I know what I'm talking about - believe me.

That would be like saying that alcohol is a gateway to cigarettes and cigarettes are a gateway to marijuana or vice versa.
In my opinion marijuana is not a gateway drug. Friends are the main reason why people end up using harder drugs. Either to be "cool" or to reach the "perfect" high (which doesn't exist).

I smoked it years ago but not anymore and I'm not sure its a gateway to anything stronger, I think the personality and addictive nature of the person determines whether or not they move on to harder stuff. That being said I would much rather have alcohol banned and pot legalized....you ever hear of someone smoking pot speeding and becoming violent?!

Well it definitely can be for sure. Most folks who have been on the "green" for some period of time have tried other drugs at one time or another. Pot is usually the 1st drug ever tried.

I think that it definitely could be but I think that peer-pressure has alot more to do with it than the drug itself.
