It gets hot only during the summer time because the Earth is tilted towards the Sun during the summer, so the hemisphere that is facing the sun heats up. Strangely, when the Earth is farthest away from the Sun, the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun, and it is summer there. This shows that the tilt of the Earth is more important than the distance away from the Sun when it comes to seasons. It really depends on where you live, though, because if you live on the Equator, it is hot throughout the year, and there are no seasons. In contrast, it is always cold at the poles, and there are no seasons.

if you mean in temperate regions, its only hot in the summer becuse of how the earth's axis tilts toward the sun, in the northern hemisphere, july trough august is considered summer because then, our hemisphere tilts toward the sun, and therefor, recieves more sunlight and becomes warmer. in winter, it tilts away from the sun and becomes colder.

Because the earth is tilted more toward the sun, thus bringing our portion of earth closer to the sun.
