I am sure not about your income, or what type of work you do. But Northwest Indiana has a lot of nice towns that have great neighborhoods, schools shopping everything, and we are so close to downtown that spending a day there or going up for dinner is not that bad. We have beautiful costline of Lake Michigan and our sunsets are pretty you can even see the Chicago skyline from the beaches. we have the National Lakeshore here that is just beautiful. I know the first thing you think of is Gary, but in reality I live 10 miles from Gary, and there is no problems and the pollution is not that bad unless you are right at the mills. The South shore runs daily to Chicago, it is a 45 minute ride and it is much cheaper and easier than fighting with traffic on the Dan Ryan. Indiana has lower tax rates and our houses are less expensive but still beautiful with large yards. I am adding a link for you to check out Northwest Indiana. We are considered part of Chicagoland. Yes I am a proud "region rat" born and raised I will never leave here. I lived downtown for about 6 months and it was just too much for me, yes it was nice looking out my window and seeing the wrigley building but I like grass and the quiet sometimes.

WELCOME! Its hard to pinpoint a location in chicago for someone moving here from out of town because each part of chicago caters to a different crowd. From the lavish Goldcoast all the way to chicagoland suburbs of the historical district of Oak Park there are many places to call home! You can find decent housing almost anywhere in chicago that fits almost any budget and with CTA you can get anywhere in chicago you want to go from the El system to the buses and METRA. It would be really hard to give you tips without knowing exactly how much money you have and are willing to spend per month on rent because it varies so much you can go from spending 600 a month in one spot all the way upwards and beyond 1500 a month all within a 20 minute radius.

The best place is Naperville, IL. It is about 30 miles SW of downtown Chicago. Naperville consistently ranks as a top community in the nation to live, raise children and retire. With ready access to a variety of transportation, housing and employment options, this booming suburb attracts thousands of new residents each year, making it one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. Naperville's diversified employer base features high technology firms, retailers and factories, as well as small and home-based businesses.
I moved here 2 years ago from San Francisco Bay area, and I love it. Check out the website below. Good luck with your move.

There's great Amtrak/Metra train service to most of the suburbs around Chicago. You probaby need to do a little research yourself on the surrounding 'burbs. Only you know what sort of living amenities you're looking for. Do you want an area with great hiking trails, great bike paths, a decent nightlife, great schools...? Most of them 'burbs have their own websites or chamber of commerice sites that list the amenities. Get a map of the Chicago area and check it out, then go to the Amtrak/Metra website for train service.

The Northwest Suburbs are very good. Plenty of Shopping, Good school systems, a number of Colleges, the only problem is property values are high. And there is plenty to do up here. Theater, Revina (Sorry bad spelling), fishing, camping, sports of all kinds, there is fine Dining and fast food so your pretty much covered.

You are one smart guy Chicago is a great city (don't let our city officials fool you). I'd really recommend doing homework. www.zillow.com is great for looking at prices of homes. I would really try to stay in chicago and not part of suburbia.

this is great for basic research
I'd just like to put in a good word for Norwood Park it's almost exactly like your old Denver neighborhood. No crime, very quiet. Close to a train that takes you to downtown and many, many more modes of public transportation
