I am from the town of Youghal in what I think is Eire's biggest county,Cork, in the south coast of Ireland in the province of Munster although I have lived all my adult life here in London.
when I grew up in Ireland in the sixties it was an agriculturally based economy with lilltle or no industry and therefore no polllution.there are 32 counties in ireland 26 in the irish republic and the remaining 6 counties are part of britain since the civil war in 1922\furhter details from the movie 'the wind that shakes the barley'
after i left in 1975 it wen t in a decade from a clergy ridden, school monk oppressed guinness based -porter- society to a society of educated people with all the modern ills including rocketing crime an d drugs and divorce previously frowned by the catholic church
the fate of a tourist dependent ireland mirrors all indigenous cultures which have been swallowed up by commercialism and modern consumerism and an occupying power;the deliberate suppression happened two hundred years ago of the gaelic language;the softness of the irish has disappeared with wealth;many o f us hate the loss of old eire
