well, I had a math test yesterday, 5 questions, 20 points each, and then I saw this bonus question(10 points) that reads: what has 4 legs, and talks? so I tried everything, but nothing worked....and so I just put Mr.Patnalli(my math teacher's name) and the test was passed back today, and on the bonus side, the teacher wrote: haha, nice quess, close, but no, you didn't get it. the correct answer is: 2 people. What the heck?how is that supposed to have anything to do with math!!!????

Learning math, or anything else, requires that you use your reasoning ability. If you are not thinking about it, trying to figure it out, then you are not truly learning. You are memorizing. Sounds like he is trying to help you develop your reasoning ability with that question. I know that you probably think that he is just messing with you and trying to make things hard, but learning isn't always easy. At least it was a bonus, and he didn't take away points for not guessing it correctly.

Contrary to popular belief, mathematics isn't taught simply for the sake of rote memorization and formulaic computation-- it's taught to get you to think critically about several ways and means to solve problems that offer several solutions.

That kind of quirky thinking question is fantastic for logic and problem solving. It makes perfect sense.

Better luck next time.

Actually, one can't discern anything from the question. How do we know it's not 4 one-legged amputees? How about two one-legged amputees and a "normal" person?

It doesn't... you may want to talk to the Dean or Principal about it (if it's really bothering you that much)
