Soemtimes you will put it in park, let off the brakes , only to find out you are in reverse!

Also there are times when I have to shove the gear shift(It is an automatic) up into park to even get it to start. Is there a way to fix it or is the old van beyond help? It is a 1995. Yeah, I'd adore a newer vehicle but we can't do another payment right now.

it's may not be loose gears. simply the shifting linkage/cable betwixt the shifting mechanism inside your car and the top of your tranny. '95 is pretty new to have a bad tranny..unless the previous owner (or yourself) has been using it to tow too high a payload, or hasn't checked the fluid in the tranny.
Having to shove the shifter to the very top to get it start may relate to a tiny button hidden under there that must be depressed by the shifter, closing the circuit so that your starting system may do it's process.
I'd check out the fluid level and the shifting linkages/cables/adjusters before i'd worry about a new tranny.

Sounds like gears in the transmission are starting to fail/slip. The only real fix is to have it rebuilt or replaced. You can try some "mechanic in a bottle" as I call it. It's a product made by Lucas Petroleum Products that you add to trans fluid to help with hard shifting, slipping, overheating, etc. It's one of the few additives I would recommend. It may buy you some time till you can go to a shop.

it the linkage in the gear shift - not your tranny-- check wiht a hrysler delaer for fun and see if there is a tech recall on it even though it is aged. Alocal shop should be able toadjust froless than 100 bucks and you are on your way with no new car!

Get ready to replace the transmission. Don't wait too long. If the trans chain breaks and it will over time the chain will tear up the front axle. How do I know? I'm glad you asked!! I now have $2,100.00 less in my savings account. Happy Motoring!!

The linkage cable is completely adjustable, either at the shifter end or the transmission end.

Its a linkage concern, either your cable is loose on trans or shifter, sometimes there is a cable adjustment that may also come loose
