I live in New Orleans, therefore I am having the same dilemma. I am building a steel shed, well vented to store as much as sixty gallons. Home depot sells a fourteen gallon fuel caddie, with pump for a hundred bucks. With my generator, sixty gallons should last two weeks.

You didn't mention the generator size so I'll assume it to be a small one for home use during power outs etc.
You should store the gas in an approved container, like a gas can you keep for your mower etc. and as usual, away from
children and so on. They are avilable in many sizes but
commonly 1 to 5 gallons. Make sure you rotate your gas stock
by using what is in the gas can every few months and then
re-filling it. There is a product called StaBil which is meant
for gas in storage. Follow lable directions.

Depending on the amount, I would suggest storing it in approved containers either outside or in a garage. Make sure you store it away from any open flames including hotwater heaters, gas dryers, and gas heater units. The gasoline fumes are what causes fire not the liquid itself. And gasoline fumes are heavier then air so they will travel along the floor.
