If I go to college with a laptop, how does wireless work there? If they have a network, do I have to have my own subscription to an ISP like AOL? Do I need a router if I have a wireless card?

If your college has wireless you just need a wireless network adapter in your laptop. It may come with one built in or you may need to buy one. Once it's installed you can go to college and the card should popup and say a wireless network was detected. Then you tell it to connect. There is a chance your college may require you to have an account or security key to connect but probably not.

And you NEVER need AOL for anything!!!

I work in the Computing Center at my university and the questions I get the most revolve around one of two things: viruses and wireless.

You do *not* need to have your own ISP account or any additional hardware besides the wireless card and laptop. All you have to do is put in your wireless card and follow any directions they give you. For example, at my university, we make students register on a certain webpage before they can use the wireless.

In Windows XP, once the card is in, you can go to Control Panel -> Network Connections and find the Wireless Network. You can open that and select the school's network (there may be multiple networks of which one or all may be your school's).

Microsoft has a help article on getting wireless running available at http://shortify.com/1527.

Well the college you go to will probilby have WIFI in some spots. But when you are in your room you will need a wireless router for the internet to work. You won't need AOL. You can use Microsoft Internet Explorer

yes, you will need a router, the router will connect to your cable,, and threo the internet siganl out into the air, the wireless card will pick up the signal and transmit it into the Internet.
you will also need to be sure and get Microsoft student Teacher, if you haven ot done so already. that will enable you to connect to your school network, and do online assignments.
