Threaten it. Say something like, "I'm going to pour this glass of coke all over you if you don't work faster. I'll do it, I'm a crazy man!"

This will frighten the cpu and cause it to work as fast as it can. You also might want to play good cop/bad cop with it. Have a friend come in afterwards and offer it a twinkie or some other reward for being speedy. Carrot and the stick, you know.

You've provided no details yet, so I can only offer some basic rules of thumb.

The first (and statistically most likely) cause is that your machine is running a bunch of unnecessary programs that you may or may not know about. It could be spyware or adware, or simply a bunch of utilities that claim they need to be running at all times when you really could get away with just running them only when you need them. If you are not absolutely confident that your machine is free of spyware, then start there first, since removing spyware is easy to do for free, and, even worse, a system that is infested with spyware is not going to run better no matter what you upgrade.

Once your computer has a clean bill of health, there are a few popular upgrades that are bound to improve your situation. CPUs spend almost all their time waiting for data to arrive from RAM or (even worse) from the hard disk, so anything you can do to get data to your CPU faster will make your entire system appear faster. Start by making sure you have enough RAM for your needs. The nice thing about having extra RAM is that most operating systems will start stuffing frequently accessed disk files in there to accelerate future accesses (file system cache), since RAM is several orders of magnitude faster than a hard disk.

If you have the ability to analyze your hard disk for fragmentation, you may find that files are scattered all over the drive, which slows down file I/O. Defrag your drive and the CPU will spend less time waiting on the disk to spin and read in your files.

Upgrading your CPU can be a seriously disruptive option, so I would not advise it until all other attempts fail. If you are shopping for a faster CPU, you really should understand how important the local cache is on the CPU. If you thought RAM was fast, the cache on the processor itself is even faster, and will greatly reduce the amount of time the CPU spends waiting for data. Local cache is not cheap though, and not upgradeable, so that is why you may see different prices for the same processor with the same clock speed.

Post some more details and I will adjust my answer to better help you. A good start would be to mention your computer details and the operating system you are running.

Try deleting the windows prefetch this will make it a bit faster cause it deletes the stuff thats on the memory you can also "over clock" the cpu. You can also use the windows registry. Go to run and type "regedit" when the window opens click on Hkey Current User then click on control panel then click on desktop on the right side search for an option name menu show display change it from 400 which is default and put it to 0. this will make menu show up faster and there which makes it faster.

A lot of computers get bogged down with Spyware and Adware. Get hold of some good AntiSpyware and Anti Adware programs to clean them out. The three I use are Adaware SE Personal, Spybot Search and Destroy, and MS Defender. Install them, and then update and run them weekly.

Learn a bit more about where these malware come from and learn to avoid getting them.

As for physically making your computer work faster, this is a term called "Overclocking", and there are many sites out there where you can learn about this.

If all you do is surf the web, I would recommend getting a bootdisk from damnsmalllinux. Burn it to a cd. Then you can boot from the CD and surf all you want and FAST because no unneccesary windows crap will be loaded.

Note that this only works if all you want to do is surf the web. I do this all the time when I know I am only going to be surfing. I'm using DSL right now!

Uninstall all unecessary programs and files. Run disk clean up and then run disk defragment and then restart your computer. If this doesn't do it, try adding some memory.

Well, what kind of computer do you have. i.e. what's the processor speed, how much RAM, and what operating system are you running. Once you reveal that info to the general public (us on yahoo answers) we can answer your question.
