How do you verify that someone graduated from a college (like it says on his or her resume)? Can anyone do it? Or do you need to go through a centralized service?

We have a service that verifies that for us--there are also free on line services where you can verify it. A call to the college would verify as well. Yep anyone can do it-if they have the persons DOB and full name.

A few methods of requesting the information:
1 - Call the university to verify.
2 - Use a service such as Akiba:

3 - Request a copy of the diploma from the candidate.

I would think that you can call the college in question- identify who you are, name of company, your position,,,etc and ask
if college says that they cannot tell you
then yes your company will need to hire a investigation service

If this request for verification is just for you- ask the person nicely and in a conversation " hey, I bet you are really proud of graduating from... can I see your diploma.. maybe by my touching it.. I will get smarter
If it is true, they will be more than willing to "show off" their accomplishments

They can simply ask for copies of your transcripts and diploma. It would be your responsibility to get these things for them. If the employer started suspecting that the diploma and transcripts were faked, they could have you sign a release, and then they could call the school to verify.

You can call the college and ask. They can't give out a transcript w/o permission from the student, but they can tell you if they attended there and if they graduated.

Ask to see their transcript and/or diploma. You can also write to the Registrar's office at their college.
