I think we have an infestation of mosquitos and flies in our backyard. Every time we take the dog out for a piss, we get bitten up by either mosquitos or flies. Is there anything that we can buy (and pet friendly) to put in our backyard? BTW .... there is no standing water.... except for the dog's urine.

Some people use citron-oil "tiki lamps" and "mosquito coils" to help keep them away. There are some sonic devices that supposedly help, too. of course, the good ole "bug zapper" actually does work. A number of pesticides are on the market that are pet-safe; just ask the helpful folk at Home Depot or Ace Hardware.

Mosquitos are attracted by the gases your skin exhales through pores. Wearing light - not dark - long-sleeved clothing is a big help. "Deet" bug repellent is also valuable.

Finally, why not put up a few birdhouses around the back yard? If you have that many flying pests, then there's plenty of dinner for the birdies!

We had this problem. We have a lot of shade it our backyard and the shaded area had a lot of vegetation overgrown under it. We removed the vegetation and that helped lower the number of mosquito's we had. We also have set off a few backyard foggers, but it is only good for like 24 hours. There are some products out there available, check out Lowe's I overheard the salesmen telling someone about some product to help control mosquito's, she lived on 2 acres, but the name escapes me.

Short of wearing bug repellent with DEET, I do not know of anything. I am currently trying this stuff called Dr Ts Mosquito Repelling granules with natural oils like lemon grass, pepperment and garlic. Too soon to give you a report though. The number for the Co. is 1-800-299-6288. It is all natural and pet friendly. Good luck.

Check out Yardsafe manufactured by Cedarcide. It's a non-toxic mix of cedar and juniper oils. I've used it in a spray bottle and those mosquitoes drop like a rock! They have products to apply to your person, pets, yard, as well as indoor uses. It smells pleasant and won't harm plants or pets.

Hello. I live in the deep south...10 miles from Florida. Our problem is the same as yours with the pests, and regardless of the weather we have the problem. Many years ago my grandfather used green pine cones, which he placed in a bucket and soaked with kerosene....then after about an hour he lit the cones, and it would smoke for days..... no gnats, flies, mosquitos, etc. My suggestion: spray yourself lightly with something with a high concentration of deet...like Deep Woods Off! It won't hurt your pet either, and of course wear light colored clothers (white). Good luck...

There is something we do here that really works.
Put a shallow dish like a pie pan and fill it with diesel fuel. It will attract those biting boogers and they drown. You can raise the pan out of reach of your pets on a fence post etc.
Sounds crazy and a little red-neck but it is effective!
God Bless

There are certain plants that mosquitos don't like, I think one is basil, so you can put them around your property and maybe that will help without harming your pets or environment. You can also try taking vitamin B - they don't like the way you smell so they don't bite you.

Call the county health department and they should be able to direct you in what to do since it is a health concern. West Nile Virus is the major one. You might be able to try the CDC website. They could direct you to the information or someone who can help.

Since they are outdoors, there's not much you can do. You might be able to get the Health Dept. or something to have the area checked out.
