yes, a match should never end with a penalty. No chance to recover. A true robbery. Perhaps the referee should have just thrown the ball in the net himself.

Nonsense... there was no way the Italian red card was a sending off..... then to keep Australia quiet with 10 men (and frankly without much difficulty) jus showed the quality gap. To be honest to win, Australia would have had to have scored. I'm writing this 3 hours after the end of the match and I bet they wouldn;t have managed to score even if they'd kept playing until now... they simply never looked like doing so... it's quite honestly astonishing that no-one who has thus far answered this question has mentioned that ridiculous decision which meant the Aussies had an hour to score against 10!!!!

Yet another Knee-jerk reaction by a referee, scared of the comeback from the Italian players (who cant manage to play skillfull football anymore but are happy to make a farce out of every minor tackle, and dive in any position they think could be advantageous),the Refs` in this tournament have been embarrasing.
One point to note though FIFA are to blame for this, they have turned their back on the fans and now dictate who should win games before a kick has been taken as well as telling refs` to give cards when a bit of a talking too would be much better.Whoever gave this edict should be strung up as it is killing the beautiful game as we know it,by not allowing flowing attacking football, but giving petty free kicks everytime a player falls over.
IMO it is diving that is more worthy of a booking as this is CHEATING!

I think like most of the others Australia were robbed that was not a penalty. The referee was right there he can not even say well I thought it was because he saw it was not. ITALY STINKS

Oh my freaking gosh!

That was horrific. What an idiot call!
Why would a ref give away such a dodgy foul, let alone a penalty in the last seconds of any match, let alone a World Cup knockout round match?!?

The refs are ruining this World Cup!

There was no getting robbed in this game Italy just won. Some people think it wasn't fair because the goal was late in the game are you kidding me. Theres no excuse for saying it was unfair because the game is already decided.

Nope, thats Italy for you. Born cheats and winners. They do anything to win. Forza Italia. But the sending off was never a sending off (red card) so justice is served. Italia for the world cup. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Yes, but if it had gone to penalties they would most likely have lost anyway. But it would have been nice if Australia had won :0)
