As far as real growth in the economy, Arizona was number one last year:

This statistic shows that most of the leaders in economic growth in the US are Western states, which fits into the statistics on population distribution as well (the West is grower much faster) Lowest rates were found in the rust belt of the midwest, though of course Louisiana was dead last, their economy shrinking by 1.6% from 2004 to 2005.

GSP per capita is a good indicator of the economy:

Clearly, one of the best states to move to in terms of economic growth and potential for long-term economic development is Idaho. The only thing keeping the economy in Idaho from growing at an even faster rate than at present is the lack of sufficient population, particularly in technological fields.

Hands down - its Texas. Economy is booming, housing costs are low, low enemployment, no really cold weather and no state income tax. Drawbacks - it does get hot in the summer, but when it is 60 degrees in January - who cares. PS - we also have some great sports teams - Mavericks, Spurs, Cowboys, Texans etc.

Nevada, either Las Vegas or Reno. Las Vegas has over a million persons in Population and Reno just topped 200,000.
