Its all in how you approach the journey. Your mind set will have a lot to do with it. But I personally wouldn't suggest you try it with out the help of someone who really understands the difference between the journey for inner knowledge and just getting high. Keep in mind all natural hallucinogens are actually poisonous and not precised in dosage.

Well, first things first, you eat peyote, it comes in the form of buttons that grow on the cactus. Secondly, you will get more than high, peyote is an extremely potent psychedelic, and is not meant to be taken lightly. the higher level of understand comes from introspection, the peyote is merely a vector for your thoughts, that puts them into a more comprehendible form, so the higher level of understanding, is really from within. If your still using words like "high" to describe a plant that Native American shamans use to communicate in their own way with the Gods, then before doing it yourself i would suggest reading something about peyote culture or shamanism, or about introspection and the mind. Peyote can do wonderful things, but in the wrong hands can send you tumbling into depths of your minds that frankly, should be kept under wraps. I would suggest the Perennial Philosophy by Aldous Huxley or Heaven/ Hell by Aldous Huxley, or any books in the Carlos Castoneda series. Hope this helps.
Peace
Happy Trips

BellaDonna, I Haven't smoked much Peyote, but I've eaten it several times with the results being that of enlightenment! Mescaline can be a little edgy, as compared to Peyote. If you can do Peyote in the desert with those of uncluttered hearts, well all that much better! I live in the desert for sure, this summer is HOT, how hot you might ask? This summer is the hottest it has been in Phoenix in 2000 years! I'm not sure how that hottest temp. was recorded or verified, but I can say for sure , that it's the hottest summer I've ever experienced here.

Yes.
Seriously, you EAT peyote. Smoking it will do you no joyful thing.
But the "higher level" stuff comes from introspection, education and ritual that you are unlikely to hit upon all by yourself, setting fire to cactus blossoms in your basement.
My advice is leave the peyote alone, it can mess you up.

Some of my friends used to experiment with jimsom weed, peyote, shrooms, and really any other drug they could find in an effort to reach enlightenment. It didn't work, all it did was give some flashbacks for years to come and some really strange ideas(like lets paint the bathroom in a cow print). you can get more understanding by going off on your own and meditating or just sitting out in the woods by a small fire until the sun comes up.

Well, with any psychedelics, they can lift the veil, so to speak, and show you what kind of things are going on in your mind that you may not be aware of. But so can therapy or meditation, so there are other ways...
Definitly, any psychelic drugs can be benefitial, but they can also fry your brain (I've seen it happen.) I think that it depends on the person. I know people who handle them very well, but I personally find them to be terrfying. Usually, I end up curled up on the floor, and not having a particularly good time. I would suggest using extreme caution when experimenting with these. With natural drugs, like Peyote & shrooms, or with chemical ones, like acid, you never quite know what you're getting. Sometimes it can be bunk, or other times, very strong. Acid is like the strongest drug in the world, in its own weird way -- a powerful dose can be MICROGRAMS.
So, explore the dark corners of your mind, but BE CAREFUL!!!

Dispite what others say you CAN smoke it, and you will get a nice body high and feel like you are floating about 2 feet off the floor (if lying on it), the only understanding you will get from smoking it is the understanding that you were really buzzed and wasted a few hours of your time.

There is no point in asking on here, try it and you'll see.
As for the guys comments about sitting around the campfire....
what a load of shite, how does he know whether his mates reached a state of enlightenment or not ? Sounds like he's pissed off his mates seemed to get something out of it, and he hasn't..
