Bought a K&N filter for a 99 Lincoln navigator, aprox 50 miles later Chek Engine light came on. scaned it with a code reader and it says bank 1 and bank 2 lean. will this hurt my engine if I continue to use this filter. they say that lean bank 1 and lean bank 2 is something to do with the mas air flow senser. could this be due to the filter?

Yes it could be due to the Mass Air Flow Sensor being contaminated with the oil residue mist from the new K&N filter. Each time you start your car, the MAF cleans it's sensing element by burning off the contaminants. CRC makes a MAF sensor cleaner which you simply spray on the MAF element. However, you need a special anti-tamper wrench to remove the MAF screws. I think the K&N will turn out fine after you clean the MAF. Of course it could have been a coincidence too. Your MAF can use a good cleaning anyways. Drive the car awhile and reset the check engine light by disconnecting a battery cable. Maybe the MAF self-cleaning cycles will cure the problem.

It definitely had something to do with changing the filter. The first thing I would check is if you made a good seal when installing the filter. If it wasn't seated correctly, you may get those 'bank 1 and bank 2' errors.

Dirtying up the mass air flow (MAF) sensor could cause the problem as well. I have cleaned my own MAF sensor and it is quite easy to do. Do not touch it. Just spray it to death with automotive electrical cleaner and let it dry well.

Pay attention to any stuttering. With my dirty MAF, my car hesitated and lacked some power until higher RPMs - and then normal power.

I don't think it'll hurt your car. A mechanic told me not to run my car under lean conditions too long since it wears the valves. The trouble is that your Engine light is always on, and it won't be helpful if you have any other problems.

Good luck.

you may have disconnected the mass air flow meter or air intake temp sensor while replacing the filter. they are located in the rubber and plastic plumbing from the airfilter to throttle body. some sensors are plugged into the bottom of the hoses and you may not have seen them. look for disconnected electrical plugs and loose hose clamps. Lean conditions on an otherwise sound engine indicates some form of intake system vacuum leaks. If you find the problem and correct it, the Check-Engine light should go out by it self after a few trips (couple of days)

Yes there are multiple complants do to oil from filter getting on mass air flow sensor, lean conditions will damage cat convertor among other things, I dont notice any improvement over originam filter but if you have to use that filter, I recomend blowing oil off after you oil filter, as for now you have to clean MAF, be careful, the are like a light bulb, and you can brake element inside, I usually just lightly spray the inside element with a throttle body cleaner

"they say that lean bank 1 and lean bank 2 is something to do with the mas air flow senser"

could be the MAS. also, did you get a big enough filter? if you don't get one big enough, it could restrict the air flow. take the filter off, put the old one on, (if you have it) drive it around and see if that doesn't fix the problem. No old filter? pull off the K&N and drive it around and see if that doen't remedy the problem. if it does, then get a bigger filter. if the problem comes back, then it doesn't like the K&N, and go back to your stock set-up.
