I have not been to NC, but I see those frequently elsewhere. Usually they're a "speedometer check" area. There are three good ways to check them.

1. Easiest: Reset your tripodometer just as you hit the first mile maker. When you hit the last, your trip odometer should say "10.0" exactly.

2. Pretty easy: Set your cruise control for exactly 60 mph before you reach the first marker. Start a stopwatch and time your distance to the 10th marker. It should take exactly 10 minutes.

3. Harder: Set your cruise control to any speed, so long as it doesn't change. Then time how long it takes to go the 10 measured miles. Use the formula R = D/T, where D is distance and T is the number of hours (note, you'll have to convert minutes to hours here... divide minutes by 60). What you'll get is your exact speed. It should match what your speedometer says.
