Ovulation itself takes a few minutes. You need to have sex *before* you ovulate in order to get pregnant. This is because sperm live for up to 3-5 days, but the egg only lives for 6-12 hours (occasionally up to 24 hours).

So much WRONG info that you have received so far! Once the egg is released the egg only lives for about 6 to 8 hours, however the sperm can live inside you for up to 5 days.....therefore you must time it right be having the pserm alive and present BEFORE ovulation! Most ovulation predictors only can tell if it Will happen ( up to 2 days in advance) or if it already has happened!
This is my standard answer......... go get a book called Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. It will help you understand your body and all the myths about it. It will help you time when you are ovulating and the best times to conceive. My Doctor recommended it to me and after 1 year of trying I got the book. It worked the very next month. It turns out that my timing was wrong due to mis-information. I hope it helps you, too! It's not only about getting pregnant. It's about knowing your body and knowing when you are fertile or not. You can pick and choose what you do with your info. Good luck and don't listen the all the myths!

during ovulation the egg lives for about 24 hours so must be fertilized within that time frame. The good news is that sperm can live up to 3-5 days if the cervical fluid is as it should be. Egg-white in consistency. So for example, if you know you are going to ovulate on tuesday, you could have sex ONLY on Thursday or Friday and still end up conceiving by Tuesday when the egg releases. Crazy isn't it?!!

Ovulation lasts 2-3 days, but your egg only "lives" for 12-24 hours, so the window is very small.
