windows 98 is a continuation of the original windows operating systems (windows 95, windows 3.1, even older). those versions of windows needed a different o.s. to get them started. In the very old versions (3.1 and older) this was some form of disk operating system (DOS) usually M.S. DOS. windows 95 and 98 came with there own built in versions of DOS but still needed it to run.

windows xp, 2000 and the windows server series are based off of the windows nt operating system which was originally designed to be a heavy duty o.s. for severs and networks. this o.s. was very stable but not very user friendly. windows 2000 was somewhat of a hybrid between the windows 9x series and the windows nt series. it had all of the stability of the nt o.s. with a small amount of the 9x o.s. user friendliness (plug and play, game support, etc.). windows xp is just a continuation of the 2000 o.s.; it still has the stability and the usability is better.

if anyone feels that i am wrong on this, please feel free to bust me out.

Win98 - easy to use but no security features; suitable to home or small office desktop use; limited support for USB
Win2000 - lots of security allowing multiple users with individual permissions; someone with only "user" permission cannot change or install; NTFS provides for superior file management and security as well as file encryption.
WinXP - home edition - more secure and stable than Win98 but still easy to use for the home user.
WinXP - Professional - Like Win2000, based on the NT kernel, far more user and file security making it suited (mandatory?) for a large networking environment and accessing the Internet.

The above is an extremely brief listing of a few major differences. There are many sites which explains in detail all the features of each. Microsoft.com and Wikipedia.com are good starting points.

Windows XP seems to be the faster version out of the 2. But Microsoft is coming out with a new version. It is called Windows Vista and will be available soon.
