Thats Italy for you. Thats also a bad ref at this tournament for you. Italy played very well the first half, but couldnt score. Then that ref decided to give a red card for no reason. Australia certianly had their chances after the card, but they couldnt score either. And then, little over two minutes into stoppage, the Italian beats a guy in the box, and instead of actually trying to score a real goal, goes down because he knows if he does, he will get the penalty kick, and thats exactly what happened. The Australia player couldnt do much about it, having already slid. Remember the Argentina match, when Messi could have gone down in the box late in the game to get a penalty, but instead kept fighting and ended up losing the ball? Personally, thats the play I like best, although apparently Italy's way ends the match quicker. I wonder what football was like when people actually played the best they could because it was beautiful, not playing ugly so they can win the game on an uncontested twelve yard shot. I was rooting for Australia, so I'm disapointed, but I think if Italy hadnt got that red card they would have won anyway, so its fair.

They should be more embarrassed at this cheap play than at scoring a goal for the US. What a rip-off. I know soccer isn't always fair and that's part of the game, but this is just shameful. There was no way that they deserved a penalty kick for that fall.

Not your example of an extremely fair game. The Italians did lots of faking fouls, till one finally duped the referee. And that guy, what is he still doing at the world cup? Well, I think fair soccer refs should be declared "Endangered Rare Species" GGGGRRRRRR !

I don´t agree, I think Australia played a great game and the penalty kick wasn't justified. Sorry. They just got extremely lucky, then will go bye bye in the next round if they keep this up

It was not fair. It wasnt a penalty. Another dramatic error of the failing referees at this tournament. Maybe Italy bribed the referee??? (they are good at that...)

It was fair, anyways Australia was supposed to score they didn't even score at all. Both teams didn't play good.
