I had my tongue pierced for a long time. I heard all sorts of horror stories about it going wrong before I went - like people's faces getting paralyzed - - but I don't think they're true. I know plenty of people with their tongues pierced - and none of them have had any complications - I think it's urban legend. I went to a good place that did a lot of piercing in Portland, OR - and they were nice and knew what they were doing. That would be my first recommendation. It heals really fast - and I had fewer problems than with my belly button or my upper ear lobe.

There are many many dangers to tongue piercing. The first is the obvious, damage to your tooth enamel. But the others are infection, and blood loss.
Also having an open wound in your mouth for I think it takes 1 week for it to heal... Is the leading cause of Heart Attacks on people under 40. Your mouth is one of the dirtiest parts of your body. That bacteria can easily enter the blood stream, and b/c it's proximity to the heart, you are at risk for Carditis, or inflammation of the heart. It can also cause Rheumatic Fever, which can cause your valves to become incompetant. There is a dramatic increase of Young People dying of Heart Attacks, a lot more than you think...
My younger sister, for one, she had a heart attack when she was 22... The younger you are when you have a heart attack, the lower the chances for survival. Because when you're old, your heart attack is more likely from a chronic condition, so your heart has developed collateral circulation, but when you're young, there is usually little or no collateral circulation to provide oxygen to essential parts of the heart...

i got my tongue pierced when i was 15 years old, and i'm 20 now. the only thing it really does is messes up the enamel on your teeth and sometimes i bit mine. but don't listen to all those stories. if that all happens it's very rare. mine was sore for about a week and i could eat really for about a day or so because it was tender and swollen.

if you go to someone unexperienced they could hit a vein and you could lose alot of blood...choose someone your comfortable with it'll either hurt a tad or not at all some swelling so eat beforehand and make sure you keep it clean if your really worried ask your piercer thats what they're there for :)
