"May be" means might be as in:
She may be pregnant.
He may be the president of the company someday.
She may be driving a BMW these days.
It may be that the green party is growing.
"Maybe" means possibly as in:
Maybe she is pregnant.
Maybe he will be president of the company someday.
Maybe she is driving a lexus now.
Maybe the green party is growing.
As you can see the placement and usage is different.
Read the sentences and see if you can see a difference in meaning.

Maybe it is just that you don't know the difference.
It may be the case that you didn't study enough in school!
Just examples...I am a math person, so I have no idea about the technical aspects!

Maybe = If or probably. (Maybe is generally followed by a comma, unless it is at the end of a sentence.
May be = Could be possible, chances or possibility is/are there.

"Maybe" means perhaps or shows a chance of possibility. Use it as an adverb.
"May be" means something might occur. Use it as a verb.
Will this happen? Maybe it will. (Adverb, describing "will.")
Will this happen? It may be. (Verb.)

May be would be like "could become" and the second is "might, or possibly"
For example
"He may be a doctor." vs. "Maybe he is a doctor."
First sentance "He could become a doctor"
Second "He might be a doctor"
hope that helps!

Substitute "perhaps" for "maybe," and "might/could be" for "may be." Hope that helps.
