The reason Cellphones are so expensive, is because of lack of competition, there are only a handful of companies providing service, Yet some companies (sprint, Nextel, Virgin Mobil) s only one example of companies who are basically one big corporation. yet have their own stores. So you have even fewer "companies" actually fighting over business.
Cell phones didn't reach this level of popularity until the Nokia 5100 series (1999) It was the first popular phone model to incorporate games, calender, notepad, etc into the phone. Aside from that you could buy custom face plates and replacement (light up) antennae for the phones. Changing the cell phone from a business tool into a fashion accessory.
As soon as the first woman put a pink faceplate on a Nokia 5100, the Future popularity of the cellphone was guaranteed.

first off cell phones are not expensive, you have a device that is capable of allowing you to speak with and hear another person from nearly any other place in the world
cell phones are around 200-300 right? if you sign a contract they often credit you at least about half the cost of the phone
200-300 hundred bucks seems like a great deal to me, to be connected to the rest of the world 24/7

They really aren't expensive. You can get quite a few for FREE. Everyone likes to stay in touch and not have to hunt down a public phone is why they are so popular.

Expensive?I bought one for 20$.They are popular because they are convienient.There are alot of companies to choose from but I like the pay as you go plan.I just buy phone cards and use them.That way I don't have to sign up with any expensive plans.

its easy to get multiple cell phones for free, I don't even have a land based phone. You can be anywhere for the most part and get a call out, its also a handy tool in an emergency (now On-Star... thats expensive).

The phone companies make huge profits of it. It is easy to carry around. It has alot of features. People can use it to contact somebody and talk to them without waiting for a reply.

i think the reason cell phones are so popular is b/c alot of people dont stay at home like they use to and its also a easer way to find out where their kids are.

People like to have them both to show off their 'importance' and the fact that they can afford the stupid things. The are wonderful for driving, doing makeup, and eating all at the same time evidently... A real time saver. I ditched mine about a year ago. I'm so over it. Haven't missed it a bit!!!
