We have many books like the collection Sandberg's Lincoln or Shelby Foots Civil War series we would like to donate but don't know where to take them or where to send them.

The Louisiana Dept. of Education has set up a website of instructional materials that are needed by schools and you could check this site to see if your donations are appropriate. See
http://www.doe.state.la.us/LANA/KATRINA/District/BooksPreviewHome.htm

The Southern Political Science Association has set up a website where flooded libraries can post their needs for book replacements. You can check this website to see if your donations are needed. See http://spsa.net/flr/

The American Library Association's website indicates that at this point, libraries that were most affected by Katrina still need extensive repair, renovation, or complete rebuilding before they will be able to accept book donations. Most of all, monetary donations are needed for this purpose. See http://www.ala.org/ala/cro/katrina/katrina.htm

If you want to donate books to other libraries with needs, the American Library Association has a factsheet addressing this. See http://www.ala.org/library/fact12.html

Here's a website I found for book donations:

Check google for "hurricane katrina donations" to get more ideas. Better than sending books is just to send money, so that the libraries can put the money to use immediately.

Either call your local Library---they should be able to give you a link or contact--or call Red Cross. Also try this website
