Ah this comes from the same story as "There was a tap on the door. I turned it on. Now I was really in hot water."
As I recall, when the hero got the message he had to flee. He then disguised himself as a dear, white-haired old lady and started to knit. He got really scared though when the detective bought a paper and proceeded to play (using the paper with the comb), "I'm combing, I'm combing, though my head is bending low."

It's about head lice. You get them with a fine tooth comb.

Don't you remember Borges describing the Falklands war as "two bald men fighting over a comb"?

no...i think you used that the wrong way...go over with a fine tooth comb means to go over every little detail as to not miss anything....

Oh, you are daft, remember, the police comb the area, like when they're searching for wigs!
