Well sice PC's can't be smart nor stupid that's not the cause.

Try cleaning and defragmenting your drive. Also heat build up can cause drives to act weird and eventually fail, keep all air ways clean and clear and if needed add another fan.

Also, you can run disk check.

Your RAM may need to be upgraded, you didn't really say when it freezes up.
A new program could be a culprit as well as spyware, I use Ad awre SE personal to take care of that junk, it can really bother things! And best of all it's free just need to download it from their site, made by lava soft. That stuff can get on there even with a good fire wall running.

Check for programs that are running all of the time, when you didn't open them, they just slow things anyways, most not needed!

Clean out your internet files and cahe even cookies, use controil panel for that.

It can be spyware, since now you don't have to be downloading to get this aggravating thingy. There some sites that will download spyware into your computer automatically, you'll probaly have to clean it up good meaning- reformatting your computer.

9out of 10 times its loads of spyware , get yourself some free spyware download from micro soft or cnet cleaning out the spyware will help make your pc run faster again...

You need some kind of system mechanic... you should defrag your comp and get something to check for adware and spyware.

there is lotof reasons for that, and virus may be one of the coz for that
