Our company treats computers with a 3-5 year life expectancy. That's why you can usually get a 3 year warranty. This is just based off how long the computer will probably run. As far a technology is concerned, 6 months after you buy one you can expect it to be "outdated".

for personal use a laptop should be good for 4 to 5 years as long as you aren't trying to play games on it. Most companies consider a laptop as a write off after the warranty expires, usually 3 to 4 years.
