I don't know the answer to your question as far as where to buy one, but use caution when purchasing less expensive systems. Most of them don't include any software and just windows software alone will cost you about $300 dollars to add to your computer,( and you have to have some sort of operating software.) The costs can add up really quickly.

NOT Dell. Their printers take cartridges only available from them.
The customer service is ok, but they practice hard sell tactics.
Gateway is a good on-line resource. E-machines are my favorite, make sure you get the AMD chip set, faster and better than the equivalent Intel and cheaper. (More popular seldom means better,)
Best Buy has some good prices. Watch their ads carefully and be sure to get all your rebates. (A $500 computer could have an initial cost of $650)
But if you can wait a year, Microsoft is due to introduce Vista, their new operating system in January. By this time next year most of the bugs and security issues should be fixed. It will be a better time to buy. Software designed specifically for Vista is supposed to run much faster. Watch for introductory specials on new computer designed specificly to run Vista.
Too bad you can't afford an Apple MAC. They are more reliable, more secure and now the can run windows operating systems right along side their own OS.

If you want the best PC for your bucks, then check out pricewatch.com or newegg.com and purchase the components and build the PC yourself. They're not that difficult to do. You just have to know what you're looking for.
Case in point: I built a PC with a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, and 128 MB Video Card for under $600. Granted it's not the best on the market, but with care and a few upgrades it should last me for at least 5 years.

Here's one for $379 (After rebates... only good until July 1), it's an eMachines T6528 with:
AMD Athlon™ 64 3500+
160GB 7200RPM hard drive
512MB of DDR memory
Double-layer DVD+/-RW
nVIDIA GeForce 6100 with 128MB Shared Memory (not the greatest graphics in the world but OKAY for older games like Doom 3)
That price does not include a monitor.

Well for under $500 you're not going to get a graphics card or much RAM in it. I got my computer mail-order cuz they have less of a mark-up than retail stores. I got mine from http://www.sears.com/ because I've got a Sears card. It was a Mirus model, came with a dvd drive and 512 MB ram but no video card either. I'll have to add one of those someday to run Micro$oft Vista Plus. I'd recommend http://www.sears.com/ or http://www.dell.com/
Good luck.

TigerDirect.com has good deals. Many require rebate but I've gotten a lot of hardware from them. All brand name.

I think walmart will be your best bet. they don't have them all the time for under five hundred. you will have to wait for a sale but when they have a sale you can get it for less then 500.00. I dont think you will be able to get one any where else for less.
